Today I thought I would practise colour grading some raw footage filmed on my phone from Filmic Pro, so I could see how well it edits.
I realise now that I should have done this before I filmed my whole film in the app, as now I can’t go back on the decision I have made, but I thought I would try it now anyways, also as a way to prepare I guess.
I just used a clip of my mum sitting on the sofa, which was filmed in log.
Before of the clip I used.
Colour correction:
First I did my basic colour correction. First correcting the white balance using the white balance key in the primaries tab.
After that I adjusted the contrast of the image, decreasing the lift and increasing the gain in the image.
Process of colour correcting.
I then wanted to bring back more colour into the shot, as I felt the image still looked a bit flat, but when I increased the saturation of the image, the colour of the book in the shot was abnormally bright and almost glowing, her skin also didn’t look natural.
So instead I created a circle window, and inverted it so it only effected the outside of the circle window.
Process of creating circle window.
Grading:
After I had the colours looking ‘normal’ I wanted to start adding more additional colour into the scene. This specific scene is when Dave and Stacey are still getting to know each other, but obviously like each other, so I want there to be a pink tone in the scene, referring back to the rom com colour palette I made at the end of March.
The choice of having a pink scene rather than red is because of the growing connection; just like the colour pink can gradually fade to red, I want the saturation and pigment of the colour to increase throughout. The red in the scene is represented through the book she is holding anyway.
First I moved the onset of the image towards pink, along with the lift and gain (meaning the shadows and highlights will now be tinted pink). I only want the effect to be subtle, so I only moved it slightly so the scene had a pink hue to it.
After that I still thought something was missing so I added a vignette to the border of the clip, to bring the scene together.

Final look:
Below shows the final changes made to the clip.

Conclusion:
Overall, I understand that I definitely should have tested all this out before I shot the whole thing in log, but after editing the scene, it works, and in fact I am pretty happy with how the whole thing turned out.
I am now exited to move on with the editing of my film, and to colour grade all the footage to make the film look how I want it to.
