9/5 - Starting to colour grade + Feelings

2004946

Today I have started to colour grade my footage, but if I’m being honest, I’m really not happy with how it looks. I’ve been trying to edit the footage to make it fit the image I have in my head.

I’m trying to edit the colours to make it look brighter/more saturated, using all the techniques I have learnt since January, including HSL colour pickers, vignettes, adjusting primaries and colour wheels etc. but nothing looks right.

I would blame it on the quality of my video, but really it’s just because I am not good enough at this.

Here’s a time-lapse of my work anyway:

Time-lapse of work, nothing looks good.

As you can see in the video, I’m trying so many different skills to try and make the video look right, but my dad’s skin is red so whenever I edit it, he looks like he’s glowing, and if I use the HSL colour picker to mask out his face from the corrections I’m making, his face looks too desaturated.

Another problem is that the last scene in my film I have had to cut, as I prefer Take 1 (which was a practice), to Take 2, but there is no end to Take 1, as it was a just a practice. So I have had to merge the first half of Take 1 with the end of Take 2, and the videos don’t match. This means I have to try and match the look of both of the videos.

I wish I had more time to expand my skills and get a lot better at it, to show my best work for this FMP, but considering hand in is next week, I don’t think I can.

Conclusion:

I’m just a bit disappointed because I thought my work was going to turn out a lot better, but I think I, and other people, have too high of an expectation for my work.

However, I will pick up and start again tomorrow to see whether I can create anything better. I hope to finish this grading by Wednesday, but I’m not sure whether it will be.
