WHO IS HE?

Carlos Baena is a professional animator currently at Pixar, who has worked on films such as Ratatouille, Finding Nemo, Wall-e, Toy Story 3 etc. He also worked at ILM where he worked on the visual effects in films such as The Incredibles, Cars, Men in Black II, Star Wars and Jurassic Park III. He is a modern and current animator living in San Francisco, California, and you can find most of his work on his Instagram account @carlos.baena or his website www.carlosbaena.com.

EXAMPLES OF HIS WORK:

My favourite scene that he has created is his work on the head chef Skinner in Ratatouille. It was interesting to see the behind the scenes of his creation process, and I love his facial expressions/overall look.

IS THERE A THEME TO HIS WORK?

The common theme between every piece of his work is character creations through animation. He works at Pixar so there is a similar look to the way his characters look, but each of the individual personalities of the characters are best expressed through their facial expressions, which Carlos creates by filming his own face to get the rough ideas of how a certain character should look while delivering a line of dialogue. Below shows the behind the scenes of creating the facial expressions of Skinner and Alfredo (Characters in Ratatouille):

FORMAL ELEMENTS IN HIS WORK:

He focuses on the form and shape of his characters when animating, especially the facial expressions when a character is talking. He used lines and texture to create the expressions to add the most impact on the viewer.

That’s the thing I like most about his work; the fact he can express different emotions through his characters easily by the shape of their mouth/eyes. His whole character animation is also very human-like. For example, the scene he created in Toy Story with Buzz Lightyear and Jessie Spanish dancing, was realistic but also enjoyable to watch.
