I was bored and wanted to practise something new so i watched a few videos on colour grading video footage to make it look like a horror film. This was my first ever time trying this, so it was difficult and definitely look longer than it should have, but i found it really fun.
First i added the contrast, and then adjusted the white balance using different lumetri scopes as reference (making sure the reds, blues, and greens are all the same level, by increasing or decreasing them based on what the values in the bottom right show.
In a few of the clips i found that the saturation of one specific colour was too bright, so i created masks and blurred them out, to change the saturation and colour.
For example, on the clip shown below i felt that the red on my actors face was too bright/saturated, and i wanted to reduce that. So i added a lumetri colour effect onto the video clip, and went to HSL Secondary > Set Colour, selected the face of my actor, and then ticked show mask to see how much of the colour i had selected in the clip. I then adjusted how much red i had selected in the video based on how much showed in the clip.
Then after i was happy with how much of the colour i had selected, i added blur so it wasn't so harsh, i then decreased the saturation. After i did that, I also created an adjustment layer which i added a vignette to, which gave me the dark horror theme effect i was looking for.
Here is the final product i made:
Overall it was fun to learn different things, and how to make my footage look more professional/how to make footage look darker/ how to change saturation and colours. I am more interested in the physical production side of films, but this side of post-production is also pretty interesting and i think the more i practise the more i will like it. I'm definitely not the best, and i have a long way to improve, but for my first time i'm pretty proud of what i have made.
