Creating zines in InDesign

Updated: Dec 9, 2021

Today we had a workshop about InDesign, and seeing examples of zines used by photographers. It gave us different ideas for layouts we could use, and how different sizes and placements of images create different effects.

An example of a person who uses unique designs and 'breaks the grid' is David Carson. He designed for a magazine called Raygun for over 3 years.

'Raygun was a beautiful magazine. Article titles were letterspaced erratically and expressively, page numbers were set in large, ridiculous display types, conventional layouts were thrown out the window leaving a sense of beautiful chaos and originality and giving a new life to 90’s design.'*

Examples of Carson's work are shown below:

Because i am interested in film, i want to create a zine of different screenshots from films i associate with altered states, so i can link it to my own interests a bit more.

I searched for different magazines that are specifically made to talk about new films, for example Total Film, Empire, Sight & Sound, Film Comment, etc. And out of the ones i researched i found Empire Magazines layouts the most interesting, and the ones i was inspired by most to include in my own work.

As you can see from the examples their designs are quite simplistic, and they tend to use big images mixed with elements of text around it. I like the idea that 'less is more' when it comes to designs, as i fell like sometimes magazines can look crowded and there's too much happening at once. I want the design for my zine to look simplistic, but to also make an impact.

I have collected different screenshots from films i have talked about previously in my research, and am going to present them in a zine using different ideas from David Carson, Empire Magazine, as well as other graphic designers or magazines i might come across.
