Dark Room Induction

2004946

Today we also had a dark room induction. I really enjoyed this because it was really interesting to understand how the prints, liquids, machines work in order to make the photos come out the way they do.

You have to place the photographic paper onto the enlarger, where we then put different transparent/translucent objects on top. You have to adjust the setting on the enlarger before then capturing the images on the paper.

After that you have to put the sheet of paper first into the developer for one minute. This is the chemicals that make your image appear onto the paper. You need to put it all in one go otherwise the photo could turn out patchy and not as clear as you want it. Rocking the tray of developer back and forth over the print helps to agitate it and make it form onto the page.

Here's a video of me developing one of the images i took:

Then you take your image out of the developer and into the stop bath using tongs, and this stops the image from developing any further, as it neutralises the alkaline. You put it in here for 30 seconds, and then move it over to the fixer, which you leave in for 5 minutes. Fixer rinses away any leftover silver halide as well as the other darkroom chemicals so you can safely expose the film or print to light.*

After putting it in the fixer you either rinse the print, or put it in a water bath, for 20 minutes to remove any of the remaining chemicals and fixer on it. After that you can squeegee it and put it on a drying rack to dry and then the print is ready.

Overall i really enjoyed learning a new way of developing images and i would definitely like to do it again, coming up with different ideas and maybe even developing film rolls, of images i might have taken on a film camera.

Here's what the images i processed looked like:

From left to right they are a cola bottle, a perfume with a small vodka bottle, a person with 'smoke' coming out of their mouth, and my hand.
