Kuleshov and Cameras 7/12/21

Today we had a task to film some footage for a film, using ideas of the Kuleshov effect, to insinuate two different genres of film (horror and comedy).

The Kuleshov effect is a technique which uses two shots, the first is a close up of a person's face leading to a second shot to highlight the persons viewpoint, to represent what they were looking at. This is designed to create a psychological relationship between two sequential shots. Research has shown the context in which a face is shown has a significant effect on how the face is perceived.

Me and my group brainstormed and then storyboarded the ideas we had for our film, however we realised that when we eventually come to edit the film on Thursday, the order of the clips would be different for both of our horror and comedy versions. So the storyboard isn't particularly in the order we will edit it, but instead just a collection of ideas.

When we actually started filming and collecting the footage, we came up with more ideas as we went along, as we saw different camera angles and shots we could use that we didn't think about before.

I found today really fun, as i was in charge of actually filming the scenes, using my phone and a vimble to make sure the scenes were smooth. I enjoyed trying to find new angles to film, as well as different shots that could be taken in a scary or a comedic way depending on how i edit it. Coming up with different ideas and also working in a group was really fun and i think today was one of my favourite sessions we've had so far.

Our end result we need to use the footage we took, to create both a horror film, and a comedy film. I think the main thing that is going to help me when editing is the sound, so i will do some research into foley art as well as the importance of sound design, before i put my clips together and edit.
